“We recycle.” Every junk removal company in Winnipeg has that on its website, including us. It is also the easiest claim in this industry to make and the hardest for a customer to check, because you watch a trailer drive away and that is the last you ever see of any of it. So here is what actually happens to the load.
The sort happens twice
The first sort is at your place, while we load. Metal goes in one area of the trailer, anything donatable is kept clean and undamaged, and electronics are kept separate rather than buried under a wardrobe.
The second sort is back at the shop, where the load gets broken out properly into its destinations. Doing it in two passes is the difference between real diversion and a token gesture — once a mattress has been crushed under rubble, nobody is recovering anything from it.
Where each category goes

The part other companies leave out
Not everything gets diverted. A hot tub shell is landfill. Soiled mattresses are landfill. Broken particle-board furniture is landfill, because nobody wants it and it falls apart on contact with moisture. Wet, mixed renovation debris is largely landfill.
Anyone telling you they divert 100 per cent of everything is either counting creatively or lying outright. We would rather give you a number we can stand behind and be specific about what falls outside it.
Why we bother, honestly
Partly because it is the right thing to do. We are not going to pretend that is the whole story though.
The landfill charges by the tonne. Every tonne we divert into donation, scrap or recycling is a tonne we do not pay to bury, and scrap metal is worth money rather than costing it. That saving is a large part of why our prices work. Sorting is not charity here; it is the business model. Being straight about that seems more useful than performing environmental virtue we would not otherwise afford.
Ask for proof
On commercial jobs we provide scale tickets and disposal documentation as standard, so a property manager or contractor can show where material actually went. If a hauler cannot produce that, treat their recycling claim as marketing.
What you can do to improve the outcome
- Keep donatables dry and separate. A good couch left in the rain overnight is no longer a good couch.
- Do not pile rubble on top of everything. It crushes the recoverable material underneath.
- Pull out the hazardous items yourself. Paint, solvents, chemicals, pesticides, propane, fuel and oil are things we cannot take at all, and one leaking can contaminate a whole load that would otherwise have been recyclable.
- Tell us what is in there. A load we know about is a load we can route properly.
